Invisalign Teen

invisalignbanner2teen w640h480 w800

If you have a teen who needs teeth straightening treatment, but who isn’t keen on having metal braces, Invisalign could be the perfect answer. Invisalign treatment uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners to straighten teeth and provide a beautiful, confident smile.

Invisalign has several benefits that are attractive to teenagers and parents alike. Teens love the fact that aligners are virtually unnoticeable compared to the traditional braces and parents can rest assured that the cost is comparable.*

Although Invisalign need to be worn for 20-22 hours per day, they can be removed for brushing, flossing and eating. They can even be removed for that special school photo. And to make sure your teen is wearing them as recommended, we can provide colour-based ‘compliance indicators’.

The team at Smilecare is highly experienced in providing Invisalign treatment for teenagers. If you are considering braces for your teenager, consider booking a FREE Invisalign consultation. At this stage we will determine if Invisalign is right for them and answer any questions you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

On this page, we’ve put together the answers to many commonly asked questions about Invisalign. If you would like more information, please contact us

Q: What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a clinically proven, virtually invisible way to straighten teeth without metal braces.

Invisalign is a series of removable, clear plastic aligners which are worn day and night over your teeth to gradually move them into the desired position. Each aligner set is worn for about two weeks and is then replaced with the next in the series until your treatment is complete.

Q: What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Benefits of straighter teeth: The benefits of having a straight smile without crowding or gaps extend far beyond the cosmetic. Teeth that are crowded or have gaps between them are often more susceptible to gum disease. They may also be difficult to brush or floss, leading to tooth decay. Straightening your teeth can result in better dental health, and the self-confidence that comes with having a smile you’re proud of.

Benefits of using Invisalign over traditional braces: There are several benefits when comparing traditional braces and Invisalign. These include:

  • Cosmetic benefits: Invisalign aligners are made of clear plastic material and are virtually unnoticeable, allowing you to straighten your teeth without anyone noticing.
  • Oral health benefits: There are no wires or metal to cause mouth abrasions with Invisalign as compared to traditional braces. And because Invisalign aligners are removable, you can eat, drink, brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth. Being removable, they also make regular dental check-ups easier.
  • More predictable treatment: With the ClinCheck software, you can actually see what your smile will look like after treatment even before you begin. And because we can review the progress during your treatment and make adjustments mid-treatment if required, you have a high level of control over your Invisalign treatment.

Q: What is Invisalign made of?
Invisalign aligners are made of SmartTrack which is an elastic aligner material made of a medical grade polyurethane resin that is bisphenol-A (BPA) free. This thermoplastic material looks similar to tooth-whitening trays.

Q: How do Invisalign Invisible braces work?
A series of Invisalign invisible aligners are custom-made in a laboratory using advanced computer imaging technology. You wear each Invisalign aligner for two weeks before replacing it with the next one, until your teeth are straight.

Here at Smilecare we have developed a simple four-step Invisalign plan:

  • Step 1: Book in for your free consultation
One of our Invisalign practitioners will answer your questions and show you some of our previous work to ensure you are well informed and confident about your choice.
  • Step 2: Receive your Invisalign treatment plan
At your records appointment, we will take x-rays, photographs and digital impressions of your teeth to create a treatment plan for straightening your teeth.
  • Step 3: Create your new smile
We will then go to work creating your new smile. The treatment plan, along with the latest 3D computer imaging technology, is used in the laboratory to create your clear aligners. The number of aligners needed (usually 15 to 30), depends on your specific circumstances.
  • Step 4: Maintain and smile!
About every 2-3 weeks, you will replace your existing aligners with the next set in your series. And every 2-6 weeks, depending on your situation, you will visit our clinic to ensure your treatment is progressing properly. It typically takes 6 to 18 months to complete orthodontic treatment with Invisalign.

Q: Is Invisalign treatment only for adults?
No, for Invisalign treatment you just need to have all of your permanent teeth (fully erupted molars). However, you must be committed to wearing your Invisalign aligners at all times except for eating, drinking and cleaning.

At Smilecare we see a range of different ages from young to older patients and we definitely encourage you to come in for a complimentary consultation if you would like to know more about Invisalign.

Q: How long does Invisalign treatment take? Most Invisalign treatments take 12–18 months.

Q: How long do I have to wear Invisalign aligners?
Invisalign is most effective when aligners are worn for 21 to 23 hours a day.

Q: Can I eat and drink with my Invisalign aligners?
Invisalign aligners are easily removable so you can still enjoy your favourite foods snacks and drinks, without feeling uncomfortable.

Q: Do the Invisalign aligners hurt?
You will feel temporary pressure when you wear Invisalign aligners for the first few days, and after each new aligner is used, as your teeth are being moved into their position, but this discomfort usually disappears after a couple of days.

Q: Are there any side-effects in using Invisalign invisible braces?
As with conventional treatments, you may feel a slight pressure at first when using Invisalign Clear Braces. Invisalign aligners may temporarily affect the speech for some people, and you may have a slight lisp for a day or two until your speech adjusts.

Q: How much does Invisalign cost?
Because Dentalcare West, Epsom Dentalcare and Greenhithe Dentalcare  is a certified Invisalign provider and treats a high number of Invisalign cases per year, this results in a reduced cost for us which we pass on to our patients. We can offer Invisalign from as little as $3000 (depending on individual cases).

We also provide a FREE Invisalign consultation to answer all your queries, as well as a complimentary take-home teeth whitening kit at the end of your treatment. We are confident in our ability to provide the best possible value for your treatment and are happy to beat any genuine written quote.

Q: Will dental insurance cover any of the costs of my Invisalign treatment?
Yes, providing you have orthodontic coverage, Invisalign should be covered to the same extent as conventional braces. You will need to check the policy details of your individual insurance plan.

Dental Implants

Missing teeth can lower your confidence and make you feel self-conscious. Losing a tooth can also impact your bite; neighbouring teeth can shift position and become more vulnerable to decay, chipping and cracking.

A dental implant is a custom-made artificial tooth that offers a permanent, proven solution for missing teeth. The artificial tooth is made of either ceramic or titanium (the same material used to heal broken bones) and is fixed to a titanium post that’s implanted into your jaw bone. Implants look, feel and function just like real teeth, and can last a lifetime with proper care.

Dental implants can:

  • Replace missing teeth
  • Support dental bridges
  • Secure dentures (either removable or full and fixed)

Advantages of dental implants

  • Unlike other dental restorations such as bridges, dental implants don’t require your teeth to be ground down on each side of the gap.
  • Implants are comfortable, convenient and strong.
  • Implants are easy to keep clean.
  • Implants prevent side effects of tooth loss such as gum recession, bone loss and speech difficulties.
  • Dental implants can make dentures secure and reliable – no more messy adhesives or slipping, uncomfortable dentures.

What does the process involve?

Although it’s different for every individual, the dental implant process generally involves four steps.

Step 1:  Consultation Your dentist will consider your general and oral health and ensure you’re a good candidate for dental implants. You’ll be given an individualised treatment plan with details of when you need to return and how long your implant process will take.

Step 2:  Implant placement

Your dentist will insert a titanium implant into the jaw bone where your new tooth will sit. The implant is then allowed to bond with the bone, which can take between 6 weeks and 9 months depending on the individual. During this time we can give you a temporary tooth if needed. Please note, charges for temporary teeth are not included in implant prices and will be quoted separately.

Step 3:  Extension placement

An ‘extension’ is added to the implant in your jaw so your new tooth can be attached snugly on top. We generally allow a few weeks for the gums to heal after this process before fitting your new tooth. However, not all implants require this step.

Step 4:  Crown placement

The final step is to secure your new tooth (the crown) in place. Your finished implant will look and feel so natural that you’ll forget you ever had a missing tooth.

Your comfort is our top priority

It’s normal to feel nervous before a dental procedure such as an implant. But with Smilecare, you can relax knowing you’re in the very best hands. We’ll go out of our way to help you feel at ease, including soft music, DVDs and warm blankets. We’ll also explain your options for pain relief, ensuring you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

FAQs

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth replacement. Since they attach directly to the jawbone, implants look and feel like real teeth, and they may prevent bone loss and gum recession at the same time.

Will I experience pain or discomfort?
Usually minimal to none. While undergoing treatment, you will receive local anaesthesia. You may have mild post-surgical soreness for up to 72 hours. Over-the-counter pain relief is generally sufficient to alleviate the discomfort in most patients. Special care will be taken to stay in contact with you after the surgery to be sure that you remain comfortable.

When can I return to work after implant surgery?
It’s a personal choice; however it is possible to return to work the next day after the procedure. Our surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation.

How long does the process take?
Complete treatment can take between six weeks and nine months, and in some cases, longer. Of course, we’ll be able to give you a more accurate idea of how long the process will take at your initial consultation.

Will I be left without teeth?
No, we can provide short term, temporary teeth until your permanent implants are ready to fit. Please note that charges for temporary teeth are not included in implant prices and will be quoted separately.

Is the metal in the implant safe?
Yes. The metal used is titanium which is the same material used to pin broken bones.

How long does an implant last?
At Dentalcare West, we use the very best materials, techniques and technology to create your implant, so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t last a lifetime. However there are a number of factors that can affect how long your implant may last. These include your general health, nutrition, oral hygiene and tobacco usage. Once your procedure is complete we’ll provide you with a warranty for your implant as well as helpful information about how to care for it.

Do you provide same-day dental implants?
We want your procedure to be as successful as possible, that’s why we allow 6-12 weeks for integration and for the bone to heal properly. Any earlier may jeopardise the success rate and may increase your chance of dental implant failure. Your dentist will be able to offer options based on your individual clinical condition.

What will happen without treatment?
When you lose your teeth, you gradually lose the bone that supported them. As this bone disappears, problems with other teeth may occur. Such problems may include pain, mobility, and lack of retention for prosthetics, sharp painful ridges, mobile gum tissue and sore spots.

Are there any age limitations for dental implants?
Any relatively fit and healthy adult can have dental implants as long as there is enough bone available in which to place the implants. Your dentist will be able to determine your suitability to have dental implants after your initial consultation.

Does my health insurance contribute towards the funds?
Possibly, depending on which insurance provider you are with. It’s best to discuss this with your individual provider.

Is finance available?
Yes, we absolutely have finance options available. For more information on interest-free payment plans, please click here

Dental Bridges

A missing tooth can damage your confidence and impact the function of your bite. Neighbouring teeth can shift position or be more vulnerable to decay, chipping and cracking.

Bridges replace missing teeth by using the two teeth on either side of the gap as support. Because the bridge is permanently attached, it also strengthens the supporting teeth. If you have a missing tooth, a bridge can be a cost-effective alternative to dental implants.

What’s involved?

Getting a bridge involves two appointments. At your first appointment, we’ll gently re-shape the teeth on either side of the gap to allow room for a crown to be fitted over them. Next we’ll take impressions of your teeth to send to our lab, in order to make your new high-quality crowns and bridge. Once this is done, we’ll call you back in for your second appointment to fit your bridge.

Wondering if a bridge is right for you? Every individual is different, so at Smilecare we offer a free Smile Consultation with one of our skilled dental professionals. During this consultation they’ll let you know if a bridge is a good option for you, answer any questions you have about the treatment and highlight the advantages a bridge may offer you.

What is All-On-4?

All-on-4 is a new procedure for replacing multiple teeth. If you wear dentures or have lost most of your teeth, All-on-4 could be the answer for you.

This cost-effective, advanced treatment supports a whole jaw-full of teeth with just four implants. All-on-4 can be used in either the upper or lower jaw, or both, to support a set of artificial teeth that look, feel and function similarly to natural teeth. Even better, the entire process takes as little as one to three days.

How does it work?

In a nutshell, two implants are placed vertically in the front of the jaw, and two are placed in the back at an angle of up to 45 degrees. Tilting the back implants gives the support needed for total rehabilitation – overcoming bone deficiencies and, in most cases, avoiding the need for bone grafting procedures.

We then take impressions to craft your new teeth. These are prepared to the highest quality in our lab. Once ready, they’re permanently fixed to the implants. And that’s it! No more worries about coping with dentures. Your permanent new teeth will look and function just like the real thing.

As an added bonus, your sense of taste will be preserved because the roof of your mouth won’t be covered with acrylic denture. And because we use only four implants, cleaning your new set of teeth will be much easier compared to conventional methods.

Teeth Whitening Options

philips zoom teeth whitening1 w800

Teeth whitening can offer an obvious improvement to your appearance and is a simple way to enhance your smile. There are a number of different teeth whitening procedures to choose from. Some take longer than others and some involve treatments at home while others only take a single treatment in our clinic. Our team at Smilecare can help you decide on the best treatment for you.

Zoom in-clinic whitening is a very effective in-office, light-activated whitening treatment for discoloured teeth. It offers the quickest result with the most shades change. Most people will experience a change of up to 6-8 shades whiter.

  • Cost: $650.
  • Appointment length: 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Contraindications: Pregnant and lactating mothers, those currently treated for a serious illness or disorders (ex. Immune compromised, AIDS, etc.), children under the age of 13 years, light sensitive individuals including those on PUVA (Psoralen + UV radiation) or other photo-chemotherapy, those taking any photo-reactive drugs or substance.

Opalescence in-clinic whitening is chemically activated whitening system that we’ve always used. Also offers us an instant and bright change, yet seems to be less effective than Zoom.

  • Cost: $450.
  • Appointment length: 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Take home whitening involves two different appointments. The first appointment involves taking impressions of upper and lower teeth and we fabricate custom-fitted trays for patients. Also includes 4 syringes of Opalescence whitening gels. This is the best option for people with hypersensitivity.

  • Cost: $399.
  • Syringes only: 2 for $65
  • Appointment length: 20-30 minutes each

Opalescence Combo whitening
includes in-clinic and take home whitening at a discounted rate. Opalescence works the best when used as combo.

  • Cost: $600
  • Appointment length: 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Contraindications: Patients with a known sensitivity to peroxides, glycols, acrylates or other resins

White Fillings

At Smilecare, we only use white-coloured, high-quality filling materials. This ensures your teeth look more natural when you laugh or smile and your fillings have a long life span. White fillings don’t contain mercury like silver fillings do, and are ideal for creating long-term strength in filled teeth. As well as placing new fillings, we can also replace your old silver fillings with tooth-coloured material.

There are a few options available, each with its own advantages.

Composite fillings

We usually recommend composite resin fillings for front teeth[bd1]. Before placing the composite filling, we first remove the decay and clean your tooth. The composite material is then gradually added to your tooth and set with a blue light. Once it’s set, we polish the filling.

Advantages of having white fillings

Glass ionomer cement

Glass ionomer cement is a tooth-coloured filling material that bonds to enamel and dentine.

After we remove the decay and clean your tooth, we’ll place the filling material into the cavity and let it set. Once it’s hardened, we’ll polish the filling. Glass ionomer cement is usually used to protect teeth rather than make them strong.

Advantages of glass ionomer cement

White fillings aren’t always appropriate for teeth with large cavities. An alternative is porcelain restorations such as inlays or crowns. The life expectancy of a white filling can depend greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite.

At Smilecare our team of dental professionals can let you know what the life expectancy of your filling is.

Porcelain Crowns

A crown can prevent a weak tooth from breaking and hold parts of a cracked tooth together.

Dental crowns can also:

  • restore a tooth that’s broken or severely worn down
  • cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of natural tooth left
  • hold a dental bridge in place
  • cover severely discoloured teeth
  • restore a dental implant
  • be used for cosmetic reasons to make your smile look better

What types of crowns are available?

Permanent crowns can be made from different materials including metal, porcelain, resin and ceramic.

  • All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns can be matched to your natural tooth colour better than other crown types. Less of your tooth will need to be drilled away too, which helps keep the tooth strong. These crowns are a good choice for front and back teeth.
  • Gold crowns are very strong and long-lasting. They’re most often used on back teeth where the sight of the gold isn’t as noticeable.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be matched to the colour of nearby teeth (unlike crowns made entirely from metal). They were used a lot before ceramic and porcelain crowns were made. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth.

How long do dental crowns last?

On average, dental crowns last 5-15 years. The life span of a crown depends on how much wear and tear it’s exposed to and how well you care for your teeth. It’s helpful to avoid grinding or clenching your teeth, chewing ice, biting your fingernails and using your teeth to open packaging.

Does a crowned tooth need special care?

No, but just because a tooth is crowned doesn’t mean it’s protected from decay or gum disease. You’ll need to keep caring for your teeth and gums, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day – especially where the gum meets the crown. It can also help to use an antibacterial mouth rinse. Regular dental hygienist appointments are a chance to get your crown checked and cleaned thoroughly.

Gum Lift

A gum lift, or gingivectomy, is a procedure that removes excess gum tissue and reshapes your gums. As a result, short teeth will appear longer and your smile will look more balanced.

There are a number of reasons a gum lift might be worthwhile. For example, some people’s gums don’t fully recede after their permanent teeth erupt. Others have a lip shape that exposes a lot of gum when smiling.

This procedure is relatively minor and is usually performed under local anaesthetic (the medicine that makes your mouth numb). No stitches are needed and the results are immediate. A gum lift can be done as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with other cosmetic dentistry.

Snap Imaging

You’ve probably imagined what a difference it would make to have a better smile, and pictured how it would look. At Smilecare, we can actually show you what your new smile would look like before we do anything, thanks to clever technology.

SNAP Digital Imaging is a great tool that makes it quick and easy to show you the likely outcome of any cosmetic dental procedure. We can also print the images so you can share them with your family and friends.

The process is incredibly quick and easy. We simply take a close-up photo of you showing your teeth when you smile. Next, we transfer this image to the computerised SNAP software. Once it’s on the computer, we choose specific treatment plan options such as veneers, teeth whitening or Invisalign. The software alters the image to show the potential results. We then print out the ‘before’ and ‘after’ images so you can see the difference. SNAP software is a photo simulation so your individual results may vary.

Smilecare’s dental professionals will explain which cosmetic dental procedures are right for you.

3D X-Rays

Chances are you’ve had regular two-dimensional X-rays at the dentist, which are useful for spotting problems such as cavities or infections. But for some dental procedures such as orthodontics and implants, we need more information to give you an accurate diagnosis and plan your treatment. We’ll let you know if we need three-dimensional images of your teeth.

3D X-rays give a much more complete picture of your teeth, bones, nerve pathways and soft tissue. All you need to do is sit in a chair, and the machine will do the work. In a single scan, our 3D X-ray machine will rotate around your head and take a series of 2D images that are then combined to create a 3D image where we can view your dental anatomy from a variety of angles. It’s quick and accurate, and you won’t feel a thing.
